METHODS: US veterans separated from OEF/OIF military service and first seen at VA health care facilities between September 30, 2001 (US invasion of Afghanistan), and September 30, 2005, were included. Mental health diagnoses and psychosocial problems were assessed using International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision, Clinical Modification codes. The prevalence and clinical circumstances of and subgroups at greatest risk for mental health disorders are described herein. RESULTS: Of 103 788 OEF/OIF veterans seen at VA health care facilities, 25 658 (25%) received mental health diagnosis(es); 56% of whom had 2 or more distinct mental health diagnoses. Overall, 32 010 (31%) received mental health and/or psychosocial diagnoses. Mental health diagnoses were detected soon after the first VA clinic visit (median of 13 days), and most initial mental health diagnoses (60%) were made in nonmental health clinics, mostly primary care settings. The youngest group of OEF/OIF veterans (age, 18-24 years) were at greatest risk for receiving mental health or posttraumatic stress disorder diagnoses compared with veterans 40 years or older. CONCLUSIONS: Co-occurring mental health diagnoses and psychosocial problems were detected early and in primary care medical settings in a substantial proportion of OEF/OIF veterans seen at VA facilities. Targeted early detection and intervention beginning in primary care settings are needed to prevent chronic mental illness and disability.","is_dataset_classified":null,"base_score":6.844815479208263,"endowment":6.844815479208263,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"views":0,"has_version_chain":false,"is_dataset":false,"is_oa":false,"pmid":"17353495","pmcid":null,"openalex_id":"https://openalex.org/W1969426010","authors":[],"funders":[],"total_grants":0,"fwci":54.695,"citation_percentile":0.9996323,"influential_citations":0,"citation_trend":[{"year":2012,"count":84},{"year":2013,"count":72},{"year":2014,"count":79},{"year":2015,"count":79},{"year":2016,"count":64},{"year":2017,"count":64},{"year":2018,"count":40},{"year":2019,"count":56},{"year":2020,"count":42},{"year":2021,"count":30},{"year":2022,"count":26},{"year":2023,"count":26},{"year":2024,"count":18},{"year":2025,"count":18},{"year":2026,"count":8}],"oa_status":"closed","license":null,"oa_locations":[{"url":"http://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamainternalmedicine/fullarticle/769661","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://doi.org/10.1001/archinte.167.5.476","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/17353495","host_type":"repository"}],"fields_of_study":["Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Research","Education and Military Integration","Mental Health Treatment and Access"],"mesh_terms":["Adolescent","Adult","Afghanistan","Diagnosis, Differential","Female","Humans","Iraq","Male","Mental Health","Prognosis","Retrospective Studies","Severity of Illness Index","Stress Disorders, Post-Traumatic","United States","United States Department of Veterans Affairs","Veterans","Warfare","Prevalence"],"keywords":["Mental health","Medicine","Psychosocial","Medical diagnosis","Veterans Affairs","Health care","Psychiatry","Family medicine","Internal medicine"],"sdg_mappings":[{"sdg_number":0,"sdg_label":"Peace, Justice and strong institutions"}],"linked_datasets":[],"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"database_accessions":[],"source":"live","citation_network_status":"fetched"},"created_at":"2026-07-24T06:16:13.640635Z","pmid":null,"pmcid":null,"fwci":null,"citation_percentile":null,"influential_citations":0,"oa_status":null,"license":null,"views":0,"total_file_size_bytes":0,"version_count":0,"fair_f":null,"fair_a":null,"fair_i":null,"fair_r":null,"fair_zscore":null,"fair_rationale":null,"fair_model":null,"fair_agent_version":null,"fair_fulltext_source":null,"fair_has_llm":null,"fair_computed_at":null,"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"db_accessions":[],"linked_datasets":[],"topics":[]}
